Description

This session looks at drugs which are used primarily for their effects on the respiratory system, with particular emphasis on those drugs that may be encountered by the anaesthetist. Therapies for the management of acute asthma are only briefly mentioned since they will be explored in greater detail in Module 07c/Systematic Pharmacology/Drugs Acting on the Respiratory System/Drugs used in the treatment of acute asthma (001-0805).

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Identify how drugs target the respiratory system based on a functional classification
• Describe the molecular mechanisms of drug actions on the respiratory system
• List the commonly used drugs and indications for their use

John Kinnear

Consultant Anaesthetist, Southend University Hospital
John Kinnear is a consultant in anaesthetics and intensive care medicine based at Southend University Hospital. He graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, and began his anaesthetics training in Durban before completing the Barts and London anaesthetic rotation. He is also Director of Medical Education at Southend University Hospital NHS Trust.
