Description

This session considers the management of acute asthma from a mainly pharmacological perspective. A clinical case is described for illustrative purposes.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Identify a structured approach to the treatment of acute asthma, based on the British guidelines 2008
• Initiate pharmacological management of a patient presenting with an acute severe attack of asthma
• Recognize signs of deterioration, and know which alternative drugs to consider in such a circumstance
• Identify which novel therapies may be used in a near-fatal episode of asthma requiring mechanical ventilation in the Intensive Care Unit

John Kinnear

Consultant Anaesthetist, Southend University Hospital
John Kinnear is a consultant in anaesthetics and intensive care medicine based at Southend University Hospital. He graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, and began his anaesthetics training in Durban before completing the Barts and London anaesthetic rotation. He is also Director of Medical Education at Southend University Hospital NHS Trust.
