Description

The session covers the main classes of drugs used to treat both non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, the use of insulin and the different formulations of insulin.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• List the main classes of oral hypoglycaemic drugs
• Explain the mechanism of action of oral hypoglycaemic drugs
• Describe the main side-effects of oral hypoglycaemic drugs
• Describe the different types of insulin and their uses

Grainne Nicholson

Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant
Grainne qualified from University College Galway and trained in anaesthesia in Ireland and Australia before taking up her post of senior lecturer and honorary consultant in St George’s Hospital, London in 1997.

Grainne has an MD from the University of London.

Her research interests include the metabolic response to surgery and her clinical interests are vascular anaesthesia and anaesthesia for trauma and emergency work.
