The circle system is the most common system used during the maintenance of anaesthesia. This session explores the principles of how the circle system works and also describes the components used within it.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe a suitable arrangement of a circle and low flow breathing system
• Describe the advantages of low flow anaesthesia
• Explain the principles of carbon dioxide absorption
• Identify the need for monitoring expired gases

Consultant in Pain Medicine and Anaesthetics, St Thomas' Hospital, London

David is a Consultant in pain medicine and anaesthetist at St Thomas’ Hospital in London.

He trained in basic pain medicine at Whipps Cross and St Bartholomew’s Hospital and went on to train in advanced neuromodulation at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital.

David is particularly interested in interventional pain medicine and clinical epidemiology.
