Anaesthetists measure the inflow and outflow of gases within the breathing system in order to monitor the internal milieu. This session examines the ways to measure inhaled and exhaled carbon dioxide and its implications.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Examine the physical principles governing the measurement of carbon dioxide
• Identify the components of a capnograph
• Describe the two types of capnograph
• Recognize different wave forms of a capnogram
• Establish the importance of capnography as a part of minimum standard monitoring
