Description

Monitoring helps with the safe delivery of anaesthesia. This session explores how infra-red (IR) and mass spectrometry assist the anaesthetist in the accurate administration of volatile anaesthetic agents.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Define the characteristics of anaesthetic agents which enable the use of infra-red (IR) spectrometry
• Define the methods by which IR and mass spectrometers function
• Demonstrate the key components of the IR spectrometer and mass spectrometer
• Predict how changes in molecular mass will affect the mass spectrometer output
• Identify methods by which anaesthetic agent concentration can be quantified

Neil Yardy qualified from Guy’s Hospital, London in 1987. Previously a Registrar at the Northwest (Manchester) School of Anaesthesia, FRCA 1996, he was appointed Consultant Anaesthetist in Ashford, Kent, UK in 1999.
