Description

This session examines the effects of electricity on different biological tissues, the way electricity is generated and supplied to electrical devices and how electrical hazards may arise for the patient connected to an electromedical device.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• State the effects of electric current of different amplitudes, durations and frequencies on humans
• Explain the ways in which electrical hazards can develop
• Define microshock and explain how it can develop

Consultant Anaesthetist, RUH Bath
Patrick Magee graduated in Engineering Science from Durham University in 1974, followed by a MSc in Biomedical Engineering. He qualified in medicine from Westminster Medical School, and after early junior posts, did his training in anaesthesia at Westminster, St George’s and Bristol. He was appointed consultant in Anaesthesia at RUH Bath in 1992. He is an examiner for the Primary FRCA and for the European Diploma. He is a visiting lecturer in Medical Engineering at University of Bath, and in Space Medicine at UCL. He is currently undertaking a MPhil at Bath University.
