Description

This session will explain how to assess volume status in the sick adult patient, including the patient with acute kidney injury, and how to use fluid therapy in adults. Key facts and evidence regarding use of intravenous fluids in acute kidney injury will be covered.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the principles, practice and evidence regarding volume status assessment in the acutely ill patient
• Describe the constituents and hazards of commonly used intravenous fluids, including blood
• Identify fluids to resuscitate patients with a range of different causes of acute kidney injury

Dr. Thomas is a Consultant Nephrologist and Physician at the Heart of England Foundation Trust in Birmingham, England, where he is also Clinical Director for Education.

He has had a clinical research interest in acute kidney injury (AKI) for some years, including earlier detection and intervention in AKI.

He is involved in various clinical and educational initiatives to improve care in AKI, and is chair of the NICE AKI clinical guidelines development group.
