This session explains the clinical approach to genital lumps and lists the key differential diagnoses.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• State elements of history taking required to assess a patient with a genital lump or lumps
• Describe necessary examination elements and possible findings in a patient with a genital lump
• List the differential diagnosis of genital lumps
• Recognise indications for, and understand how to perform a skin biopsy
• Identify situations in which consultant advice or specialist referral is appropriate

Kelly Morris -
Freelance writer, editor, and researcher

Kelly Morris first encountered HIV medicine during her first house officer job, when she was enthused by the open, friendly, non-judgemental attitude that prevailed in the specialty. She soon returned to HIV medicine and started in sexual health at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, becoming a research fellow.
She subsequently moved from clinical medicine to become a senior editor at The Lancet medical journal, where her specialty subjects included HIV, sexual health, and women’s health.
Once she returned to clinical medicine, she held various posts in HIV and sexual health, in London, Northampton, and Devon, including as an acting consultant.
For a decade, she has been a freelance medical writer, editor, and researcher, with a particular interest in infectious diseases. She has worked on reports for government, journalism for doctors and the public, scientific reviews, and the design and interpretation of studies. She now works freelance full time.

Lynn Riddell -
Clinical Director of Sexual Health Services

Lynn Riddell completed her undergraduate training in Cape Town and her postgraduate training at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London and the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford.

She moved to Northampton to develop an HIV unit which is currently one of the fastest growing units in the UK.

Lynn is now a Consultant in Genitourinary Medicine and is the Clinical Director of Sexual Health Services for Northamptonshire NHS Foundation Trust.
