Description

This session will cover the virology and pathogenesis of genital herpes virus infections.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the characteristic structure of a herpes virus and the role of its component structures in assisting infection and pathogenesis
• Explain how inoculation with viable HSV results in productive local infection and the subsequent immunological control mechanisms which act to limit this infection
• Describe neuronal infection
• Explain the concept of viral latency and reactivation, including the cellular, immunological and virological features associated with these phenomena

Ashini Fox is a final year Specialist Registrar at Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham. Having qualified at the University of Cambridge in 2002, she worked at Nottingham City Hospital prior to moving to the West Midlands. She has a special interest in Medical Education and is currently completing a Master Degree in Medical Education at the University of Nottingham. She also has a special interest in Genital Herpes and manages a recurrent herpes clinic at Birmingham Heartlands hospital.
