Description

This session considers how to test for HIV in different clinical settings. Risk factors, how to conduct an in-depth pre-test discussion (PTD), frequency of HIV testing and indications for HIV testing are also covered.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Explain the relevant risk factors for HIV for someone undergoing HIV testing
• Identify individuals who would benefit from more in-depth pre-test discussion
• List the indications for HIV testing
• Explain the topics that should be covered in a pre-test discussion
• Give an HIV test result, both negative and positive
• Advise patients how often HIV testing should be performed

Kati Perez, Vincent Lee and Andy Winter

Kati Perez -
Specialist Registrar GUM, Manchester Centre for Sexual Health, Manchester Royal Infirmary

Dr Perez graduated from Edinburgh University and is currently a specialist registrar in North West deanery. Her special interests are tropical infections in HIV, HIV and aging, and syphilis.


Vincent Lee -
Consultant Physician, Manchester Centre for Sexual Health, Manchester Royal Infirmary

Dr Vincent Lee has been a consultant at the Manchester Centre for Sexual Health since 2006. He trained in Sheffield and Wessex Deanery. He was the BASHH Education Committee secretary from 2006-2010. Currently he is the BASHH STI/HIV course director.


Andy Winter -
GUM Consultant

Dr Andrew Winter has been a Consultant in Genitourinary Medicine at the Sandyford in Glasgow since 1999. He trained in Oxford and Birmingham, completing a PhD in bacterial pathogenesis. Dr Winter’s special interests include STI epidemiology, NAAT testing for STIs, e-health and HIV. He has been heavily involved in the design and roll-out of Scotland’s national sexual health electronic record system, NaSH. Dr Winter was Chair of BASHH Scotland from 2003 to 2008.
