This session provides an overview of the common causes of genital ulceration, their diagnosis and basic management.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the common causes of genital ulceration
• Describe the presentation and natural history of herpes and syphilis
• Explain how to distinguish between the causes of genital ulceration using sexual history taking, clinical examination and/or investigation
• Define the correct information to give to people with herpes including recognition of recurrence
• Describe the basic management of herpes

Tatiana Tchikhiaeva -
General Practioner specialising in Community Sexual Healthcare

Tatiana graduated in Russia in 1993 and gained a DFFP in 2003, as well as the Letter of Competence in Intrauterine Techniques and Subdermal Contraceptive Implant Techniques, a DRCOG in 2003 and a MRCGP in 2005. In March 2008, she was awarded a Letter of Competence in Medical Education (LoC MEd of Faculty of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care.

Tatiana works full-time as a GP and part-time as a Speciality Doctor in Community Sexual Healthcare.

Martin Talbot -

Martin Talbot is a Consultant in Genito-urinary Medicine/HIV at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, Honorary Reader in Medical Education at Sheffield University and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He is an external examiner for the MFSRH examination.
Until recently, he was the author of the HIV chapter in Clinical Evidence and has published widely in the fields of sexual health, epidemiology, clinical GUMedicine/HIV and medical education. He enjoys teaching and holds master’s degrees in general and medical education.
