Description

This session looks at the importance of the surgical trainee to be able to recognize, formulate a treatment plan and select surgical intervention for acute endocrine crises.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to list the main causes, describe the signs and symptoms, and formulate a treatment plan for;
• Hypercalcaemia
• Post-operative hypocalcaemia
• Thyroid storm
• Acute adrenal insufficiency
• Phaechromocytoma crisis

CT1, North Middlesex University Hospital
Constantine Halkias, is a Core Surgical Trainee at the London Postgraduate School of Surgery (Lead Provider UCL Partners), Health Education North Central and East London. He holds a special interest in General Surgery HPB and upper GI surgery and a research interest in Evidence Based Healthcare.

Vas Constantinides -
Senior SpR in Endocrine Surgery, Hammersmith Hospital
Vasilis Constantinides is a Senior Specialist Registrar in the Department of Endocrine Surgery at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Imperial College London. He was awarded a Doctorate in Medicine in 2009 and has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in specialties such as general, colorectal, HPB and Endocrine Surgery. He has a keen interest in teaching and has been nominated twice for the teaching excellence award at Imperial College Medical School.
