Description

This session aims to provide a practical understanding of the physiology of fluid balance and renal failure, to aid trainees in their management of the surgical patient.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the physiology of fluid distribution in the human body
• Define the methods of detecting hypervolaemia in surgical practice
• Explain fluid balance management in surgical practice
• Identify the principles of acid-base balance in the human body
• Interpret arterial blood gas results in surgical practice

John Findlay -
Core Surgical Trainee
John Findlay is a Core Surgical Trainee in Reading. He went to university in Nottingham, and did his Foundation Programme training in the East Midlands before moving to Oxford for Core Surgical Training.


Ridzuan Farouk -
Colorectal Surgeon, Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust
Ridzuan Farouk is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading. He trained in Glasgow and Edinburgh, followed by colorectal fellowships at the University of Hull and the Mayo Clinic, USA. Riz has been an MRCS examiner since 1999.
