Description

This session looks at masses in the middle and posterior mediastinum and will review the common causes of masses at these sites.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
Recognise the normal appearance of the mediastinum on a frontal chest radiograph (CXR)
Detect an abnormal mediastinal contour
Use the silhouette sign to make an assessment of the likely location of any mass that you detect on a CXR
Identify a mass on cross-sectional images of the thorax and, based on its location, relationships to other structures, morphology and density provide a reasonable differential diagnosis as to the likely aetiology of the mass
