This session provides an overview of jaundice from the radiologist’s perspective. It includes a discussion of the basic science of bilirubin, the classification of jaundice's multiple causes, the spectrum of imaging investigations available and an algorithm for investigation.

By the end of this session you should be able to:
• Use your knowledge of the production, metabolism and excretion of bilirubin to classify jaundice into prehepatic, hepatocellular and posthepatic (obstructive) causes
• List possible causes of jaundice according to the above classification
• Identify the most appropriate imaging strategy for a given clinical presentation
• List the relative merits of interventional radiology and endoscopy in palliating obstructive jaundice
