Description

This session will help you to appreciate the clinical relevance of breast anatomy and effects on the breast of age and alteration in hormonal environment; the principles underlying the techniques of mammography, breast ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and their clinical applications; and the normal appearances of the breast on mammography, ultrasound and MRI.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the anatomy of the female breast
• Describe the effects on the breast of age and hormonal changes and their clinical relevance
• Describe the radiographic techniques employed in diagnostic mammography
• Describe the technique of breast ultrasound
• Identify the appearances of the normal breast on mammography, ultrasound and MRI
• Recommend the most appropriate breast imaging technique or sequence of techniques for the investigation of breast pathology

Ruchi Sinnatamby and Nisha Sharma

Ruchi Sinnatamby MA MBBChir MRCP FRCR -
Consultant Radiologist and Director of Studies in Clinical Medicine, New Hall.

Ruchi is a Consultant in Breast Imaging at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. She is highly committed to education and training and teaches widely at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She is responsible for SpR training in the Cambridge Breast Unit and is 5th year Tutor for the Cambridge Radiology training scheme. Her varied teaching portfolio includes Anatomy, Communication Skills and Teaching the Teachers to Teach as well as Radiology. The R-ITI has been her first experience of e-teaching!


Nisha Sharma -
Nisha Sharma is a consultant breast radiologist and has been director of breast screening for Leeds/Wakefield since 2008. She is also the clinical specialty lead for breast and has been involved in the organisation of breast lectures and training for radiology registrars.

Nisha Sharma is a Module Editor for Module 4a Breast on the Radiology Integrated Training Initiative (R-ITI) project.
