This session has been developed to enable you to understand the organisation of the NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) and the assessment work-up of recalled cases. You will also review the evidence base for ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) breast screening, including screening Hodgkin's patients and women otherwise at high risk for breast cancer.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the evidence base for screening mammography, ultrasound and magnetic resonance (MR) breast screening
• Outline the National Health Service Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP)
• Identify the diagnostic algorithms used in assessment of asymptomatic women recalled from the NHSBSP who have mammographic abnormalities
• Recognise the factors leading to an increased risk of breast cancer and the significance of increased risk

Sue Barter -
Consultant Radiologist and and Module Editor for 4a Breast module

Sue Barter MBBS MRCP DMRD FRCR is a Consultant Radiologist and Director of Breast Imaging at Addenbrookes Hospital NHS Trust, with a special interest in Breast and Gynaecological Imaging. She spent many years as a DGH Consultant, and in the past has been QA Radiologist for the National Health Breast Screening Programme for Eastern Region and Clinical Director of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Breast Screening Service. Sue has been secretary of the RCR Breast Group and a member of the NICE Familial Breast Cancer Guideline Group. She has lectured and written extensively on various aspects of breast imaging and gynaecological imaging. She has been Module Editor of the 4a Breast module of R-ITI since 2007.

Erika Denton -
National Clinical Director for Diagnostic Imaging, Consultant Radiologist and Honorary Professor of Radiology

Since 2005 Erika has been National Clinical Lead, and subsequently National Clinical Director, for Imaging at DH leading a complex programme of work across all aspects of imaging. This has delivered considerable additional capacity for imaging services and marked reduction in waiting times. Her work has included cancer, paediatric, interventional, cardiac and forensic imaging. She has led deployment of PACS systems across the NHS and has national responsibility for the three radiology academies.

Erika was previously Divisional Clinical Director for support services, Director of Breast Screening, head of radiology training and the radiology academy in Norwich.
