This session describes the historical and clinical background and considerations prior to renal transplantation. The normal ultrasonic grey-scale and colour Doppler appearances of the transplant kidney are also described.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the clinical issues prior to consideration of a patient for transplantation
• Explain the preoperative management of such patients and the basic surgical technique
• Explain a number of immunosuppressive therapeutic options
• Perform a grey scale and colour Doppler examination of the transplant kidney and recognise the normal range of the Doppler indices

Consultant Radiologist

Grant Baxter has been a Consultant Radiologist at the Western Infirmary, Glasgow, since 1993.

His special interest is in oncology, especially GU oncology, ultrasound and renal transplantation.

Grant is Past President of the BMUS and is Deputy Editor of Clinical Radiology and has multiple paper and book publications to his credit.

He loves all sports - especially those that can be watched in comfort!!
