Description

This session details the process of assessing an enlarged liver in a child and outlines a structured approach to evaluating the main causes of hepatomegaly. An outline of further imaging investigations is also discussed.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Develop a systematic approach to the assessment of an enlarged liver in a child
• Identify the main causes of paediatric hepatomegaly
• Recognise what other imaging findings to look for and what investigations to recommend next

Consultant Paediatric Interventional Radiologist

Alex Barnacle is a consultant paediatric interventional radiologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London. She graduated from Southampton University in 1995.

After three years of clinical paediatrics (MRCPaeds 1998), she completed her general radiology training in London on the Hammersmith/Charing Cross rotation and completed Fellowships in paediatric and interventional radiology at Great Ormond Street Hospital and at The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.

As well as the spectrum of paediatric interventional radiology, her main fields of interest are the imaging and treatment of paediatric vascular malformations and paediatric renal stone disease.

She is the radiology lead for the regional vascular anomalies service provided through Great Ormond Street Hospital.
