This session describes the normal development of the embryonic urinary tract and goes on to examine some of the developmental abnormalities that may occur.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Explain in basic terms the embryonic development of the human urinary tract
• Describe the variations in development that lead to congenital urinary tract abnormalities and normal variants seen in neonates, children and adults

Consultant Paediatric Radiologist

Ima Moorthy MA MRCP FRCR, has worked in the NHS for over two decades: first as a physician, and then as a radiologist. She has been a practising consultant paediatric radiologist in Brighton, in a tertiary referral children’s hospital, since 2007.

Being very interested in pursuing excellence in medical education, she completed an MA degree in Clinical Education at Brighton University in 2014. Her dissertation combined her interests in radiology, and in the education of Foundation doctors. She has recently joined the Royal College of Radiologists’ FRCR 2A panel.

Her research interests include many facets of paediatric radiology practice, including urinary tract imaging. Her belief in evidence-based practice and her clinical experience are reflected in the Radiology - Interactive Training Initiative (R-ITI) sessions that she has written.
