Description

This session focuses on the role of imaging in developmental delay and mental retardation.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Recall the definition of the terms 'developmental delay' and 'mental retardation'
• Define the role of neuroimaging in developmental delay
• Recall which imaging modality to use
• Recall which magnetic resonance (MR) sequences are appropriate
• Identify where neuroimaging plays a key role in diagnosis

Stephen Chapman and Lesley MacPherson

Stephen Chapman -
Dr Stephen Chapman has been Consultant Paediatric Radiologist at Birmingham Children’s Hospital since 1984 and Head of Department since 1993. He has authored a number of radiology textbooks and has previously headed the Birmingham Radiology Training Scheme. He was the Module Editor for paediatrics for R-ITI.


Lesley MacPherson -
Dr Lesley MacPherson is a Paediatric Radiologist, specialising in Paediatric Neuroradiology, Paediatric ENT imaging and Foetal MR imaging. Following completion of her radiology training in the UK in 1999, she undertook a Paediatric Radiology Fellowship at The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, Australia and subsequently a Paediatric Neuroradiology Fellowship at The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto.

Since her return to the UK in September 2001, Dr MacPherson has worked as a consultant Paediatric Radiologist at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where she is lead for Paediatric Neuroradiology. She provides specialist input to the Regional Cochlear Implant and Foetal MR imaging programmes.
