This session discusses the key features of imaging a child with epilepsy, including the indications for emergency and non-emergency imaging and the roles of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The relevant cerebral anatomy will be demonstrated and the radiological features of the more common causative pathologies in childhood epilepsy will be shown.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Identify the relevant cerebral anatomy
• Appreciate the roles of CT and MRI in the imaging of a child with epilepsy and acute onset convulsions
• Recognise the required MR techniques
• Identify the features of the more common pathologies causing childhood epilepsy

Lesley MacPherson

Dr Lesley MacPherson is a Paediatric Radiologist, specialising in Paediatric Neuroradiology, Paediatric ENT imaging and Foetal MR imaging. Following completion of her radiology training in the UK in 1999, she undertook a Paediatric Radiology Fellowship at The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, Australia and subsequently a Paediatric Neuroradiology Fellowship at The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto.

Since her return to the UK in September 2001, Dr MacPherson has worked as a consultant Paediatric Radiologist at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where she is lead for Paediatric Neuroradiology. She provides specialist input to the Regional Cochlear Implant and Foetal MR imaging programmes.
