This session reviews the clinical and pathological features of multiple sclerosis (MS), the findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning, and its radiological differential diagnosis.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Discuss the pathological changes seen in MS and relate them to the changes seen on MRI scanning
• Describe the clinical features of MS and its variants
• List appropriate MRI scanning protocols for the investigation of the patient with suspected MS
• Recognise the common disorders which may mimic MS on MRI scans
• Recognise common normal anatomical structures and incidental findings which may be confused with MS

Steve McKinstry

Steven McKinstry is Consultant Neuroradiologist at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. He has previously been Head of Training and Regional Postgraduate Education Adviser for the Northern Ireland Radiology Training Scheme and was also formerly examiner in the FRCR Part II. He gets the opportunity to quiz neurosurgeons on neuroradiology as an examiner in the Intercollegiate Neurosurgical Fellowship. Interests include travel and French.
