Description

This session looks at disorders of gastric emptying and how they are diagnosed.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe how the stomach handles liquid and solid food components
• List the main factors affecting the rate of gastric emptying
• List the main clinical causes of abnormal gastric emptying
• List the methods available for measuring gastric emptying
• Describe the main elements of a radionuclide technique for measuring gastric emptying
• Interpret normal and abnormal results of gastric emptying studies

Philip Robinson MB ChB (Hons), MRCP, FRCR

Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist, Leeds Teaching Hospitals and University of Leeds

Philip has been a Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals and the University of Leeds since 2001. His clinical work and research cover all aspects of musculoskeletal imaging including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound. Specialist interests include sports, image-guided intervention and sarcoma imaging/intervention.

He has been awarded 11 research grants and won two research awards. His publications include one book, 10 book chapters, over 80 peer reviewed publications (for over 30 of which he is first author) and over 15 invited review articles. He is currently an Editorial Board member of American Journal of Roentgenology and Editor in Chief of Seminars in Musculoskeletal Radiology.
