Description

This session describes the interaction of x and gamma radiation with matter and introduces the concept of attenuation coefficient. Emphasis is put on the two most important types of interaction for diagnostic radiology: photoelectric absorption and Compton scattering.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the important photon interactions with matter
• Describe attenuation in terms of absorption and scatter and explain the meaning of attenuation coefficients
• State how attenuation coefficients vary with photon energy and the physical properties of the material
