Description

This session describes, through examples, how the Fick principle can be applied to physiological systems.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the Fick principle
• Describe how the Fick principle can be applied to determine cardiac output using oxygen (O2) consumption, dye dilution, or thermodilution
• Follow the shunt equation
• Describe the use of fluxoids to illustrate the mass of a substance
