Description

This session describes the anatomy of the brachial plexus, its relation to surrounding structures and specific nerves supplying motor and sensory innervation to the upper limb that is relevant to regional anaesthetic blocks.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the functional anatomy of the brachial plexus and the utility of brachial plexus blocks
• Describe the relation of the brachial plexus to other structures in the neck and axilla
• Outline the main branches of the brachial plexus
• Describe the nerves supplying muscles and sensation in the arm and forearm
• Describe the approaches to anaesthetizing the brachial plexus and its main branches

Tom is a graduate of Southampton Medical School. His foundation training was in Swansea and Cardiff and his core training in anaesthesia was in Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

Interests include education in anaesthesia, obstetric and paediatric anaesthesia.
