Description

This session examines the axillary block including its indications, contraindications and complications, and explores the anatomy pertinent to this regional anaesthetic technique.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the anatomy and sonoanatomy relevant to performing an axillary block
• List the indications and contraindications for an axillary block
• List the different approaches to performing an axillary block
• Describe how to perform an ultrasound-guided axillary block safely
• List the potential complications of an axillary block

Consultant Anaesthetist, Torbay Hospital

Andrew graduated from Bristol medical school in 2000. He completed his anaesthetic training on the South West Peninsula rotation and undertook a one year fellowship in Regional Anaesthesia. He was appointed to a Consultant post at Torbay hospital in September 2011.

His professional interests include regional anaesthesia and education. He is a regular faculty member on Regional Anaesthesia training courses at local and national levels.

Andrew is a content author for the e-LA project.
