Description

This session is concerned with how anaesthesia affects the respiratory system, and how these changes lead to the clinical effects seen during anaesthesia. The session will illustrate the clinical effects of altered respiratory mechanics, the clinical effects of an altered respiratory drive, the clinical effects of altered airway reactivity and the clinical effects of changing gas mixtures.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Explain the clinical effects seen due to the changes in respiratory physiology occurring during anaesthesia.
• By understanding the likely mechanisms you will be better able to anticipate these changes and respond to them appropriately
• Classify respiratory changes according to their mechanism
