Description

This session will examine the conduct of anaesthesia in the patient with a pre-existing renal transplant.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Assess the current level of renal function in a patient with a transplant
• Describe the implications of underlying chronic disease in the renal transplant patient
• Identify the anaesthetic implications of immunosuppression and other concurrent drugs
• Describe the intra-operative management of a patient with a renal transplant including haemodynamic control and patient positioning

Ian Hunter -
Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine, Raigmore Hospital, Inverness

Ian graduated from Edinburgh University in 1998. He undertook Anaesthesia and ICM training in the Northern Deanery. He was appointed as a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine in 2009 at The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough. He has recently moved to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

His major interests within critical care are trauma management and education, especially the use of simulation to improve non-technical skills.

Ian spends most of his spare time picking up dirty laundry left on the floor by his three children and loading the dish washer.

Ian is a content author with the e-LA and e-ICM projects.
