Description

This session will review the definition and classification of anaemia. It will also review symptoms, signs and investigations used in the management of anaemic patients and conclude with a section on the risks of anaesthetizing anaemic patients.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Define anaemia
• Describe the appropriate investigation and management of patients with anaemia
• Recognize the risks of anaesthetizing anaemic patients
• Identify a safe management plan for anaesthetizing patients with anaemia

Julian Dimech -
Consultant anaesthetist, Middlemore Hospital, Auckland, New Zealand.

Dr Dimech has recently completed a postgraduate certificate in education and has an interest in the education of both undergraduate medical students and postgraduate anaesthetic trainees.


Gareth Kessell -
Consultant Anaesthetist, James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough

He is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at both Durham and Newcastle Universities and maintains an active interest in undergraduate education.

He has co-authored several sessions for the e-learning Anaesthesia project.
