Description

In this session you will cover the definition and aetiology of multiple sclerosis, including the implications of anaesthetizing patients with this disease, and the aetiology and anaesthetic implications of myotonias, in particular myotonic dystrophy.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Identify the anaesthetic challenges encountered when anaesthetizing patients with multiple sclerosis or myotonia
• Pre-assess a patient with multiple sclerosis or myotonia
• Recognize the importance of avoiding some of the common anaesthetic agents in patients with multiple sclerosis or myotonia
• Recognize the potential contraindications to certain anaesthetic techniques in patients with multiple sclerosis or myotonia
