Description

This session provides a definition of obesity, describes the effect of obesity on the various organ systems, highlights its association with other co-morbidities and discusses the implications of obesity for anaesthesia.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Define obesity and morbid obesity based on body mass index (BMI)‏
• Calculate a patient's BMI
• Describe the multisystem effects of obesity
• Identify comorbidities known to be associated with obesity
• Take appropriate account of the anaesthetic implications of obesity
