Description

As the first of three, this session aims to introduce the concept of day-case surgery as a package of care. Emphasis is placed upon the importance of every aspect of the patient journey in order to produce an efficient, effective and safe service, whilst maintaining quality of care. The advantages of day-case surgery and the key organizational elements are considered.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the concept of day-case surgery and anaesthesia as a package of care
• List the potential advantages to the patient and to the hospital of day-case surgery
• Describe the important pre-requisites for day-case surgery in terms of facilities and staffing
• Explain the organizational issues throughout the patient journey pertinent to delivering an effective, efficient and safe day-case surgical service

Dr Andrew Burtenshaw, MBChB MRCP FRCA, is Specialist Registrar Anaesthesia & Intensive Care Medicine. West Midlands Rotation.


K-L Kong -
Consultant Anaesthetist, SWBH NHS Trust and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer, University of Birmingham

K-L has been involved in teaching and training throughout his career having served as college tutor, programme director, member of West Midlands Deanery Training Committees and examiner for the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

His main current clinical interests are resuscitation, anaesthesia for ophthalmic, day-case and reconstructive surgery, the preoperative assessment of patients with complex medical problems and anaesthetic allergy.

He was elected President of the British Ophthalmic Anaesthesia Society in 2011, having previously served as Honorary Secretary (2007-2011).

He has edited about 60 e-Learning sessions for the Royal College of Anaesthetists’ e-LA project, having authored several sessions himself, and is currently editor of the specially commissioned ophthalmic anaesthesia module.
