Description

This session aims to teach a framework with which to assess the suitability of individual patients for day case surgery (DCS) based on the relevant surgical, medical and social factors. It also emphasizes the importance of, and requirements for, a safe discharge.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Explain the importance of meticulous patient selection for day case surgery
• Use a framework for assessing a patient’s suitability for day case surgery based on the principles of surgical, medical and social selection criteria
• List and discuss factors pertinent to each of these categories
• Accept or reject the option of day case surgery and develop a plan to enable safe and effective management of the anticipated difficulties needed to facilitate day case surgery for less straightforward cases
• Describe the necessary pre-requisites that will enable a safe and comfortable discharge of the patient from the day case surgical facility

Dr Andrew Burtenshaw, MBChB MRCP FRCA, is Specialist Registrar Anaesthesia & Intensive Care Medicine. West Midlands Rotation.


K-L Kong -
Consultant Anaesthetist, SWBH NHS Trust and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer, University of Birmingham

K-L has been involved in teaching and training throughout his career having served as college tutor, programme director, member of West Midlands Deanery Training Committees and examiner for the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

His main current clinical interests are resuscitation, anaesthesia for ophthalmic, day-case and reconstructive surgery, the preoperative assessment of patients with complex medical problems and anaesthetic allergy.

He was elected President of the British Ophthalmic Anaesthesia Society in 2011, having previously served as Honorary Secretary (2007-2011).

He has edited about 60 e-Learning sessions for the Royal College of Anaesthetists’ e-LA project, having authored several sessions himself, and is currently editor of the specially commissioned ophthalmic anaesthesia module.
