This session discusses the interpretation of the capnograph, together with the causes and management of hypo- and hypercapnia.

Objectives

• Explain the importance of capnography as a monitor
• Describe and interpret abnormal capnograph traces
• Describe the causes of hypocapnia
• Describe the causes of hypercapnia
• Summarize the management of these situations

Julia Richards -
Julia Richards is a consultant in anaesthesia at Ealing Hospital, London. She was a Specialist Registrar in anaesthetics at Imperial College School of Anaesthesia including posts at Northwick Park Hospital and held a senior clinical fellow post in head and neck anaesthesia at Charing Cross Hospital, London.

Roger Sharpe -
Roger Sharpe is a Consultant Anaesthetist and Director of Faculty Development in Medical Education at Northwick Park and St. Mark’s Hospital, Harrow, Middlesex. He has an interest in resuscitation.

Roger is a content author for the e-LA programme.
