Description

This session provides a structured approach to the recognition, causes and management of cardiac arrhythmias during anaesthesia. It covers urgency of treatment and treatment options.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe an abnormal cardiac rhythm (arrhythmia) as seen on an ECG
• Identify a likely cause for an arrhythmia
• Assess the severity of the effect of the arrhythmia
• Identify which arrhythmias require urgent treatment
• Describe how to instigate appropriate treatment in a timely fashion

Rachel Vickers and Michael Greenway

Rachel Vickers -
Rachel is a Consultant Anaesthetist, based at the Queen’s Hospital, Burton upon Trent.

Her main clinical interests are obstetric anaesthesia, including running a busy obstetric anaesthetic clinic.

She is also interested in human factors and has extensive teaching experience in this area both locally and nationally.

Rachel is a content author on the e-LA project.


Michael Greenway -
Michael is a Specilalist Registrar in anaesthetics, at the Stoke School of Anaesthesia.

His main interests are in anaesthesia for trauma and orthopaedics, and regional anaesthesia.

He is a content author for the e-LA project.
