Description

This session will examine the incidence of awareness under general anaesthesia and identify which patients are most likely to experience it. It will describe measures to reduce the incidence of awareness, and how to manage an episode when it does occur.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Briefly summarize awareness and recall
• Describe the spectrum of experience a patient may have
• State the incidence of awareness and risk factors which predispose to it
• Describe the short and long-term sequelae of awareness
• Explain how to manage a case of awareness
• Discuss preventative measures

Oonagh Duff is a senior registrar in anaesthesia currently working at Kings College Hospital, London.


Yogen Amin -
Yogen Amin BSc, MB ChB, FRCA is a consultant neuroanaesthetist and neurointensivist at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square and an honorary senior lecturer at University College London and The Institue of Neurology. His main interests include anaesthesia for epilepsy and awake craniotomies, research ethics and medical education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
