Description

This session describes the various aetiologies, pathophysiology, clinical features and management of heart failure in the critical care setting.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the aetiology and basic pathophysiology of heart failure
• Recognize the clinical features of heart failure
• Qualify the severity of heart failure
• Identify appropriate investigations for patients with suspected heart failure
• Manage a patient in heart failure in the intensive care unit

Natalie Forshaw -
Anaesthetic Registrar, St George’s Hospital, London

After medical training in Leeds, Natalie undertook anaesthetic training within the London Deanery.

She is currently working as a specialist registrar within the St Georges’ School of Anaesthesia. She has a special interest in cardiothoracic and paediatric anaesthesia.

Natalie is a content author on the e-LA project.

Nick Fletcher -
Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist, St Georges Healthcare NHS Trust, London

Nick Fletcher is a Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist and Intensivist and Honorary Senior Lecturer at St Georges Healthcare NHS Trust, London. He is also the director of the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit.

Nick is a committee member of the Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthetists (ACTA) and chair of the Cardiac Intensivists in ACTA.

He is an editor and content author for the e-LA project.
