Description

This session will help you to evaluate haematological changes in critically ill patients, and manage them accordingly.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Diagnose likely causes of anaemia
• Evaluate changes in white blood cells
• Evaluate thrombocytopenia including Heparin Induced Thrombocytopenia with Thrombosis (HITT)
• Use blood components rationally
• Seek haematological advice appropriately

Louise Tillyer

Director of Laboratory Medicine, Royal Brompton, London

Louise trained in Edinburgh and became a consultant haematologist in 1983. She started at Newham and the Royal London Hospitals before moving to Lewisham. She then joined the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust in June 2006.

Her areas of expertise include: general clinical haematology, management of patients with haemoglobinopathies and hereditary bleeding disorders. Her research interests include haemostasis and the use of transfusion in sickle cell disorders.
She is also the chair of the Venous Thromboebolism Committee.

Louise is a content author for the e-LA project.
