Description

This session gives a broad overview of abdominal ultrasound. It will include equipment selection and usage, and advice on optimising technique. Tips on good report writing will be provided.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the regional surface anatomy of the abdomen
• Plan an ultrasound examination and tailor it to the specific clinical question
• Position the patient in order to maximise examination quality
• Explain how the ultrasound image may be improved by changing the control settings
• Develop ultrasound reporting skills

Peter Cantin

Consultant Sonographer, Derriford Hospital

Peter qualified as a diagnostic radiographer in 1991. He developed an early fascination with ultrasound and obtained his ultrasound qualification in 1995. He has worked at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth ever since and was appointed as Consultant Sonographer in 2006, based in general medical ultrasound. His work involves extensive teaching and education commitments together with an interest and responsibility for developing clinical quality assurance methods in ultrasound. This work formed the basis for his doctoral research project, completed in 2017. He views the development of e-learning platforms as a natural progression in facilitating CPD for ultrasound practitioners.
