Description

This session considers ultrasound of the spleen. It will include an overview of normal anatomy as well as normal variants, common pathologies, focal lesions, and trauma. Tips on reporting will be offered.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the equipment and patient positioning requirements for ultrasound imaging of the spleen
• Identify normal anatomy and normal variants of the spleen
• Recognise the ultrasound appearance of the most common pathologies
• Describe some limitations, pitfalls and tips when scanning the spleen
• Recall the indications and technique for contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) of the spleen
• Review our suggested management algorithms for focal splenic lesions
• Compare your reporting style with our suggested style

is an Interventional Radiologist at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust.


Simon John Freeman -
Consultant Radiologist
Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust

Simon Freeman was appointed consultant radiologist with a sub-speciality interest in non-obstetric ultrasound at Derriford Hospital Plymouth in 1997. He is involved in almost all areas of non-obstetric ultrasound including regular use of ultrasound contrast agents and guided interventional procedures.

His research interests are predominantly related to ultrasound and uroradiology. Simon has authored four book chapters related to ultrasound, and has had more than 50 papers published in scientific journals.

Currently he is President of the British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS).
