Description

This session will explain how to undertake ultrasound of a renal transplant. Normal findings and commonly seen complications of renal transplant will be discussed. Tips on reporting will be offered.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe anatomy of a renal transplant
• Describe the equipment required for high quality ultrasound imaging of the kidneys
• Recall the theory of how to scan a transplant kidney
• Recognise normal ultrasound appearances of a renal transplant
• Recognise ultrasound appearances of commonly seen complications of a transplant kidney
• Explain the importance of a well-structured report

Jane Belfield and Steven Powel

Jane Belfield -
Jane is Consultant Radiologist, specialising in uroradiology, at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. She completed her general radiology training in Sheffield and undertook a fellowship in uroradiology in Leeds prior to starting as a consultant in 2010.

She is a regular reviewer for the British Journal of Radiology, Clinical Radiology and The Clinical Teacher journals. Jane is part of a team of module editors for Module 4c Genito-Urinary and Adrenal of the Radiology Integrated Training Initiative (R-ITI) project.

Jane is the secretary of the British Society of Urogenital Radiologists (BSUR) and a member of the European Society of Urogenital Radiologists (ESUR) Scrotal Working Group, helping to develop new guidelines and publishing reviews on testicular imaging.

Jane is involved in teaching and is a clinical and educational supervisor for radiology trainees in the Mersey Deanery and an examiner for the Royal College of Radiologists FRCR Part 1 Anatomy Exam. She has completed a Masters in Medical Education, graduating from the University of Dundee in 2013.


Steven Powel -
Steven is a Consultant Interventional Radiologist with a specialist interest in venous, renal and transplant interventions. He is Clinical Director of Imaging Services and clinical lead for Interventional Radiology at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

Steve is a regular reviewer for Clinical Radiology, Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology and the European Journal of Vascular Surgery. He is also a member of the British Society of Interventional Radiology and the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe.

Steve is the President of the Vascular Access Society of Britain and Ireland with a significant role in developing education and research related to dialysis access care within the UK.

He is also a member of the national clinical reference group for the clinical commissioning of interventional radiology in the UK.
