Description

This session is the second of two that give an overview of ultrasound of the carotid and vertebral arteries. Assessment of stenoses will be discussed. Other common pathologies will be considered. Tips on report writing and avoiding artefacts will be offered.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Discuss the role of examination of carotid and vertebral arteries in the investigation of stroke
• Describe what is required from an examination of the carotid arteries
• Describe the criteria by which stenoses are classified
• Recognise other common pathologies sometimes seen when imaging the carotid system
• Describe common artefacts and errors that can affect the results of the examination
• Compare your reporting style with our suggested style

Colin Deane

Clinical Scientist and Honorary Senior Lecturer, King's College Hospital

Colin Deane is Director of Medical Engineering and Physics and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at King’s College Hospital, London. He has over twenty-five years of experience in vascular ultrasound at King’s.

A former President of the British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS), he teaches on courses within and outside King’s College London on the effective use and applications of ultrasound and has contributed to several books and papers on clinical ultrasound. He hopes that these e-learning sessions prove helpful so that when, one day, he has an ultrasound scan, the operator is able to obtain the best quality images and results to aid his rapid return to good health!
