Description

This session will describe normal ultrasound appearances of the internal jugular vein and femoral vein. Techniques for ultrasound guided vascular access will be described including useful tips and potential pitfalls to avoid.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the equipment necessary for ultrasound guided vascular access
• Discuss the evidence comparing ultrasound guided vascular access with landmark techniques
• Describe the anatomy and ultrasound appearances of the internal jugular vein and femoral vein
• Describe the techniques for ultrasound guided vascular access
• Describe the common pitfalls of this procedure and how to avoid them

Programme Director for Emergency Ultrasound and Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, Dalhousie University

David is an Emergency Physician with a special interest in Point of Care Ultrasound. He trained in the UK gaining his fellowship of the College of Emergency Medicine in 2002. He is a member of the College Ultrasound Steering Committee and holds the Certificate of Focused Emergency Ultrasound. He currently works in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada where he is Programme Director for Emergency Ultrasound and Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Dalhousie University.

David has been involved in training doctors in Point of Care Ultrasound since 2003. He was involved in the development of Emergency Ultrasound Courses in the UK (EmergencyUltrasoundUK) and continues to teach on courses both in the UK and internationally. He has published a number of ultrasound-related articles in peer reviewed journals and book chapters and continues to be involved in ultrasound-related research. He is delighted to be involved with this HEE e-Learning for Healthcare project which will provide a valuable resource for those with an interest in Point of Care Ultrasound.
