Description

This session considers the ultrasound appearance of the adult hip. It will include technique, normal anatomy and common pathology, as well as common pitfalls to avoid. Tips on reporting will be offered.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the equipment and patient positioning required for high quality ultrasound imaging of the hip
• Recognise normal hip anatomy
• Recall the indications for hip sonography
• Recognise ultrasound appearances of common pathology
• Describe the limitations and pitfalls of ultrasound imaging of the hip
• Compare your report writing style with our suggested style

Consultant MSK Sonographer, Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital (NNUH)

Stephen studied MSc Medical Ultrasound at Cranfield University in 1998 whilst in the Royal Air force.

In 2000 he left the RAF having served in the UK, Germany, Kosovo and Cyprus to join the NHS at Lincoln.

Whilst working as superintendent sonographer at Lincoln he developed a keen interest in MSK ultrasound and performed ultrasound-guided multilevel intramuscular injections of botulinum toxin in children with cerebral palsy.

Stephen left Lincoln in September 2010 and for a short time held a locum MSK sonographer position at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) before moving to Australia to work in MSK ultrasound. On his return from Australia in 2012 he was appointed consultant MSK sonographer at NNUH. Currently, his role includes developing one-stop diagnostic/treatment visits and teaching at the nearby Norwich Radiology Academy.
