Description

This session considers the practical technique of ultrasound guided steroid injections. It will include evidence to support guided technique, indications for injection, benefits, exclusion criteria and delivery technique. Tips on reporting will be offered.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the equipment required to perform a guided injection
• List indications for guided injections
• Recall the benefits, pitfalls and exclusion criteria of guided steroid injections
• Describe principles of delivery technique
• Appreciate the importance of clinical governance as regards guided injections

Clinical Specialist Sonographer for Musculoskeletal Ultrasound, Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust

Clare completed her PGDip in Medical Ultrasound at Leeds University in 1997 and has since worked in the ultrasound department of the Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust. In addition to developing her ultrasound skills Clare worked as the clinical tutor for ultrasound students from 2001-2003. Her current role is the clinical specialist sonographer for musculoskeletal ultrasound in the Trust and leads this service in partnership with the lead MSK radiologist.

She has been involved in musculoskeletal ultrasound since 2003 and has helped locally to develop the role of the sonographer in ultrasound guided steroid injections. Clare is involved in the teaching of sonographers and other health professionals in this field through her links with the SoR Special Interest Group.
