Description

This session will describe common fractures, dislocations, pathologies and normal variants found in the hip joint and femur. These will be illustrated using radiographic examples.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Assess radiographs of the hip joint and femur using a systematic approach
• Identify and accurately describe common fractures
• Recognise common pathologies found in the hip joint and femur, describe them accurately and know when to ask for a specialist (radiologist) opinion
• Describe normal variants which may be mistaken for a fracture or pathology

Kara qualified as a Diagnostic Radiographer in 2000 and currently works at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield as a Musculo-skeletal Reporting Radiographer, based in Trauma and Orthopaedics. She undertakes formal reporting of images from the trauma environment on both the appendicular and axial skeleton.

Kara plays an active role in the education of staff in image interpretation, and works closely with the consultant nurse to support staff in gaining the Emergency Nurse Practitioner qualification. Kara also teaches undergraduate and post-gradutate students at Sheffield Hallam University on an ad hoc basis.
