Description

This session will focus on the hilar regions and also the mediastinal structures including the heart. The anatomy and common pathology of these areas will be discussed and related to their appearances as seen on chest radiographs.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the basic anatomy of the mediastinum with particular reference to the mediastinal compartments
• Describe common pathological mediastinal processes that cause abnormal appearances on chest radiographs
• Use knowledge of the silhouette sign to aid localisation of mediastinal abnormalities

Andrew Yeung -
Radiology Registrar, Freeman Hospital, Newcastle Upon Tyne

Andrew Yeung is a registrar in radiology on the Newcastle upon Tyne scheme. He graduated in 2003 from the Leeds Medical School.

After house jobs in Bradford and Leeds he undertook basic surgical training and obtained Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MRCSEd). After a year as anatomy demonstrator at the University of Leeds Medical School, Andrew began radiology training in 2008.


John Tuckett -
Radiology Specialty Trainee, Newcastle-upon-Tyne scheme

John graduated in 2006 from the University of Oxford Medical School. After undertaking Foundation Training in Reading, Banbury and Oxford, John began Radiology training in 2008.

John has authored several of the x-ray sessions for the Image Interpretation project. He is also author and module editor for the musculoskeletal MRI sessions.
